Beating Chronic Pain, The Natural Way
Do you suffer in silence from chronic pain? Does it affect even the simplest daily task? You’re not alone. This week is National Pain Week and a new survey reveals just how big a problem chronic pain is in Australia.
Sufferers can spend many thousands of dollars every year on conventional pain release, and say it puts immense pressure on both their finances and their relationships.
In a survey by Chronic Pain Australia, an astonishing 86% of sufferers stated that they feel stigmatised due to their condition because it’s often an ‘invisible’ problem. Out of the 1200 chronic pain sufferers surveyed, 87% found accessing health professionals was too expensive; some said they felt like ‘drug addicts’ whilst seeking pain relief.
The truth is, there are other more natural options available. They may not work for all but they’re definitely worth a try.
Clinical experience and research have shown that magnesium can be a very effective treatment for chronic pain. We have long known that using magnesium, as an oral supplement, in the bath or as a transdermal spray, can relieve muscle pain. What we didn’t know until recently is that it can also decrease nerve pain.
For the most part, when we experience serious pain, it’s due to excessive stimulation of a brain chemical called NMDA. There are medications available to combat this, but they come with significant side effects. We now know that magnesium can be used to decrease and balance NMDA without any side effects.
Not surprising then, magnesium deficiency can be a cause of severe pain. If you are a sufferer, you would benefit greatly from taking an oral supplement daily, as well as a warm magnesium bath a couple of times a week.
One of the major causes of chronic pain in Australia is arthritis; it affects around 18% of the population. Arthritis is actually an ‘umbrella’ term for a wide range of conditions, including inflammation, joint damage, loss of mobility, chronic joint pain and posture deformity.
Magnesium has more than 300 functions in our bodies, including acting as an anti-inflammatory, boosting the immune system, strengthening cells and controlling NMDA.
Try adding 1-3 cups of magnesium flakes to a warm bath (or half a cup to a foot soak) and relaxing for 30 minutes. Follow the treatment by drinking plenty of pure water. The magnesium will not only give relief from chronic pain but will also combat stress and improve your sleep.
If you have an existing medical condition, please check with your doctor first.
Many people believe magnesium flakes and Epsom salts are the same product. True, they both contain magnesium, but they are slightly different; magnesium flakes contain magnesium chloride whilst Epsom salts contain magnesium sulphate. Both are effective in treating chronic pain conditions.
Again, just dissolve 1-3 cups of Epsom salts in a warm bath and relax for 30 minutes. Try this a couple of times a week, or as required. You could also try adding a few drops of your favourite essential oil for aromatherapy and relaxation.
